Driving
For door-to-door driving directions we recommend Google maps - click the directions link in the placemarker pop-up and enter your starting address/postcode for printable turn-by-turn directions and a map.
When you arrive at the guest house (our check-in is 3pm - 10pm) there is ample free parking as shown on the map below. You can park for free all day/night with no maximum time or other restrictions a few metres from our door on both sides of the street (where two red cars are parked opposite each other) and also on the 'pink' bays next to the grassed area at the top of the image.

Sunderland Bus Station / Park Lane Interchange
The easiest option after arriving at Sunderland Bus Station aka Sunderland Park Lane Interchange is to take the #35 'Laser' bus service to South Shields. These buses take approximately 20 minutes from Sunderland Park Lane to reach Fowler Street in South Shields (where you should disembark the bus).
The first bus from Sunderland Park Lane departs at 5.30am (7.30am on Sundays) and the last bus departs Sunderland Park Lane at 11pm. The Sunderland to South Shields service departs every ten minutes. You can find out more about the #35 bus service including route, timetable and ticket prices here.
South Shields Bus Station
It takes approximately ten minutes to walk to/from our guest house and South Shields Bus Station. The route can be seen here:

South Shields Bus Station (on the top left of the image) to Annie's Guest House (on the right side of the image) might be helpful for those walking to us from the bus station.
Walk from the bus stands down to Fowler Street shopping area of South Shields. At Fowler Street turn to your right and follow the road straight up to a set of traffic lights. These traffic lights are the start of Beach Road. Turn left at the set of traffic lights and walk along Beach Road, crossing straight over the small roundabout. We are door number 106 on the right hand side of the street, half way along Beach Road.
Alternatively, if your bags are too numerous and/or heavy you can easily take a taxi from the rank along side the bus station. Because it's such a short journey this will only cost you a few pounds.

Newcastle upon Tyne by Regional Bus Service
There are three bus/coach station/pick-up/drop-off points in Newcastle upon Tyne depending on the bus/coach operator you travel with.
Regional bus services operated by Arriva Northumberland, Nexus, Stagecoach and Go Ahead use either the Eldon Square Bus Station or the adjacent Haymarket Bus Station on the corner of Percy Street and Saint Mary's Place, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7PF.
Timetable information for regional services into Newcastle upon Tyne (e.g. from Northumberland) can be obtained via Traveline on 0871 200 22 33.
Upon arrival at Eldon Square or Haymarket Bus Station, Newcastle upon Tyne we recommend you take the Metro (train) service to South Shields. You'll need to head right towards the multi-storey car park and walk straight ahead down Percy Street. At the junction with Blackett Street turn left. The entrance to Monument Metro station is on the right hand side of the street.

Whilst Haymarket Metro Station is closer to the Haymarket Bus Station the yellow line to South Shields does not run to/from Haymarket Metro Station. If you opt to start your Metro journey to South Shields from Haymarket Metro station you will need to change trains (onto a yellow line South Shields-bound train) at either Monument or Central Station.
Once you have arrived at Monument Metro Station you need to board a yellow line train to South Shields.

Monument Metro Station to South Shields - single (one-way) journey adult ticket costs £3.20. If you will be returning to Newcastle upon Tyne later that day we recommend that you initially buy an adult DaySaver ticket for £4.40 which allows a full day of Tyne & Wear Metro travel.
A child's single fare is 80p and a child's DaySaver ticket (under 15, proof of age required for over 12's) is £1.20.
(For returning visitors to the North East who may be wondering about off-peak/peak tickets, off-peak/peak daysavers and return tickets - Tyne & Wear Metro revised its ticket pricing structure in January 2013. Newcastle upon Tyne by National Coach Service

National coach service National Express use Newcastle upon Tyne Coach Station which is located on St. James' Boulevard, NE1 4EE. This is a three minute walk to Central Station. National Express timetable information and tickets can be obtained via 0870 580 8080 or online.

National coach service MegaBus offers a twice daily low cost service to/from Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Leeds, London and Sheffield. This picks up and drops off outside Newcastle upon Tyne Central Station, Neville Street, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 5DH. MegaBus timetable information and tickets can be obtained via 0900 160 0900 or online.
Once inside Central Station head towards the underground Metro service (opposite the main ticket office) and take a yellow line train to South Shields.

By train to Sunderland train station
The easiest route from Sunderland train station (Sunderland Train Station, Athenaeum Street, Sunderland, SR1 3HP) is to take the Athenaeum Street exit from Sunderland train station and turn left towards Fawcett Street. On Fawcett Street take the #35 'Laser' bus service to South Shields. These buses take approximately 20 minutes from Sunderland Park Lane to reach Fowler Street in South Shields (where you should disembark the bus).

From Newcastle International Airport
We recommend taking the Metro (train) service from Newcastle International Airport to South Shields. Total journey time is around 55 minutes with a short walk (or taxi ride) from South Shields Metro station to our guest house.
After boarding the Metro at the airport (on the green line) you'll need to change onto a South Shields-bound yellow line train at either Monument (recommended), Central Station (recommended), Gateshead, Gateshead Stadium, Felling, Heworth (recommended) or Pelaw stations.

This Metro map summarises the route although the yellow line that services South Shields Metro station terminates at St James' hence the over-lapping stations are those listed above (Monument, Central Station, Gateshead, Gateshead Stadium, Felling, Heworth and Pelaw).

Trains depart every 12-15 minutes from around 5:30am (Mon-Sat), 6:30am (Sun) until around 10:30pm - 11pm with the last train from Central Station to South Shields at 11:27pm (seven days a week).

From the Port of Tyne International Passenger Terminal

If you are using public transport DFDS Seaways operate a shuttle bus service to/from Newcastle Central Station, Neville Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 6DL to the Port of Tyne International Passenger Terminal. They are timed to coincide with DFDS cruise ship arrival and departure times. As these buses transfer to Newcastle upon Tyne Central Station after your arrival in the north east you may wish to spend some time in Newcastle city centre before checking in to our guest house.

These buses are easily identifiable by the DFDS Seaways logo on the side (see image above). The transfer costs £3.80 for adults and £2.80 for children (prices correct March 2013).
