destination every day of the year and already there is progress on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>The ambitious plan \u2013 titled South Shields 365 \u2013 sets out a bold vision for a radical town centre redevelopment including a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/category\/cinema\/\" title=\"Cinema\" alt=\"Cinema\"><u>cinema<\/u><\/a> as well as retail and leisure facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Contractors have arrived in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/south-shields\/\" title=\"South Shields\" alt=\"South Shields\"><u>South Shields<\/u><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/market-place-south-shields-ne33\/\" title=\"Market Place South Shields NE33\" alt=\"Market Place South Shields NE33\"><u>Market Place<\/u><\/a> to prepare the eyesore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/wouldhave-house-south-shields-ne33\/\" title=\"Wouldhave House South Shields NE33\" alt=\"The Word Market Place South Shields NE33 \"><u>Wouldhave House<\/u><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/market-place-south-shields-ne33\/\" title=\"Market Place South Shields NE33\" alt=\"Market Place South Shields NE33\"><u>Market Place<\/u><\/a>, NE33 1JF for demolition with the site earmarked for a new central library and arts centre.<\/p>\n<p>The move is a serious signal of intent from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/south-tyneside-council\/\" alt=\"South Tyneside Council\" title=\"South Tyneside Council\"><u>South Tyneside Council<\/u><\/a>, which is in discussions with a number of prospective private-sector development partners interested in making the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/south-shields\/\" title=\"South Shields\" alt=\"South Shields\"><u>South Shields<\/u><\/a> 365 master plan a reality.<\/p>\n<p>Counsellor Iain Malcolm, leader of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/south-tyneside-council\/\" alt=\"South Tyneside Council\" title=\"South Tyneside Council\"><u>South Tyneside Council<\/u><\/a>, said: \u201cBy pressing ahead with the demolition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/wouldhave-house-south-shields-ne33\/\" title=\"Wouldhave House South Shields NE33\" alt=\"The Word Market Place South Shields NE33 \"><u>Wouldhave House<\/u><\/a> we are making it absolutely clear that the delivery of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/south-shields\/\" title=\"South Shields\" alt=\"South Shields\"><u>South Shields<\/u><\/a> 365 is our number one priority.<\/p>\n<p>As a council, we are taking a strong and decisive lead on site assembly, infrastructure and public realm improvements so that we can create conditions that are ripe for private sector investment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/south-shields\/\" title=\"South Shields\" alt=\"South Shields\"><u>South Shields<\/u><\/a> has a beautiful coastline, a magnificent riverside and a unique and very welcoming community.<\/p>\n<p>These are powerful assets that we can build on to secure a bright future for our town centre.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/south-shields\/\" title=\"South Shields\" alt=\"South Shields\"><u>South Shields<\/u><\/a> 365 master plan is about making sure that this tremendous potential is realised.<\/p>\n<p>We are ambitious for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/south-shields\/\" title=\"South Shields\" alt=\"South Shields\"><u>South Shields<\/u><\/a> and the key to success is to play to its strengths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the driving forces behind the development of the masterplan was the shocking discovery that for every \u00a3100 of disposable income in their pockets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/south-tyneside\/\" title=\"South Tyneside\" alt=\"South Tyneside\"><u>South Tyneside<\/u><\/a> residents spend only \u00a33.70 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/south-shields\/\" title=\"South Shields\" alt=\"South Shields\"><u>South Shields<\/u><\/a> town centre.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike high streets across the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/south-shields\/\" title=\"South Shields\" alt=\"South Shields\"><u>South Shields<\/u><\/a> town centre is facing major threats and challenges as a result of the rise of online shopping, out-of-town retail parks and the tough economic climate.<\/p>\n<p>Whether we like it or not, the fact is our residents are choosing to spend their money elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>It has become very clear that the town centre needs to change if it is to prosper.<\/p>\n<p>We cannot turn the clock back.<\/p>\n<p>Our vision for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/south-shields\/\" title=\"South Shields\" alt=\"South Shields\"><u>South Shields<\/u><\/a> is to make it a place of year-round cultural, leisure and retail activity for residents, businesses and visitors.<\/p>\n<p>We recognise the need to offer an experience that people cannot get on the internet or at out-of-town retail parks.<\/p>\n<p>A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/category\/cinema\/\" title=\"Cinema\" alt=\"Cinema\"><u>cinema<\/u><\/a>, for example, would benefit retailers by attracting visitors at all times of day and on every day of the week, playing a key part in growing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/south-shields\/\" title=\"South Shields\" alt=\"South Shields\"><u>South Shields<\/u><\/a> offer and complementing activities on our sea front and riverside.<\/p>\n<p>By expanding our retail and leisure offer, we can not only retain a greater proportion of our residents\u2019 spending power in the borough but also attract more visitors from other parts of the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A powerful theme running throughout the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/south-shields\/\" title=\"South Shields\" alt=\"South Shields\"><u>South Shields<\/u><\/a> 365 master plan is the concept of the town centre, riverside and sea front as a peninsula with each offering a gateway to the next.<\/p>\n<p>There is a desire to knit these three distinct areas together in a way that ensures a seamless transition from one to another while still retaining their individual character and function.<\/p>\n<p>The potential for coastal and riverside attractions to boost town centre trade is not lost on a council that is already leading the development of a \u00a32.3m waterfront park on the riverside and a \u00a316m pool and leisure complex on the sea front.<\/p>\n<p>Both projects are set for completion later this year and in keeping with the peninsula theme, supporting schemes to build stronger links with the town centre are under way.<\/p>\n<p>The demolition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/wouldhave-house-south-shields-ne33\/\" title=\"Wouldhave House South Shields NE33\" alt=\"The Word Market Place South Shields NE33 \"><u>Wouldhave House<\/u><\/a> will open up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/market-place-south-shields-ne33\/\" title=\"Market Place South Shields NE33\" alt=\"Market Place South Shields NE33\"><u>Market Place<\/u><\/a> to the riverside while a \u00a32.4m scheme to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/ocean-road-south-shields-ne33\/\" title=\"Ocean Road South Shields NE33\" alt=\"Ocean Road South Shields NE33\"><u>Ocean Road<\/u><\/a> more pedestrian-friendly will encourage more coastal visitors into the town centre, capitalising on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/south-shields\/\" title=\"South Shields\" alt=\"South Shields\"><u>South Shields<\/u><\/a>&#8216; success as a traditional seaside resort.<\/p>\n<p>Counsellor Malcolm said \u201cWhen you consider the town centre&#8217;s close proximity to the sea front and riverside and each area&#8217;s respective strengths, you can see that we are well on the way to developing a truly world-class offer for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/south-shields\/\" title=\"South Shields\" alt=\"South Shields\"><u>South Shields<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/south-tyneside-council\/\" alt=\"South Tyneside Council\" title=\"South Tyneside Council\"><u>South Tyneside Council<\/u><\/a> has led an incredible journey of transformation across the borough, from the redevelopment of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/boldon-business-park-ne35\/\" title=\"Boldon Business Park NE35\" alt=\"Boldon Business Park NE35\"><u>Boldon Business Park<\/u><\/a> in the 1990&#8217;s to the transformation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/jarrow-south-tyneside-ne32\/\" title=\"Jarrow South Tyneside NE32\" alt=\"Jarrow South Tyneside NE32\"><u>Jarrow<\/u><\/a> town centre and <a is the final piece of the jigsaw.<\/p>\n<p>We already have a great deal to be proud of but we must move forward with the creation of new opportunities for residents, businesses and
