its six month closure for a \u00a32.2 million refurbishment.<\/p>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/images\/blog\/20130325-national-glass-centre.jpg\" alt=\"The National Glass Centre Liberty Way Sunderland SR6 0GL\" title=\"The National Glass Centre Liberty Way Sunderland SR6 0GL\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>From this weekend visitors can see new exhibitions, special events and family friendly activities including hands-on arts and crafts activities, themed tours and treasure hunts and free glass-blowing demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p>A new permanent exhibition &#8220;Stories of Glass in Sunderland&#8221; will also be unveiled tracing the history of glass-making in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/sunderland-tyne-and-wear\/\" title=\"Sunderland\" alt=\"Sunderland\"><u>Sunderland<\/u><\/a> from the 7th century.<\/p>\n<p>The new gallery spaces will also host a wide range of international exhibitions, presenting the work of leading contemporary artists in glass and ceramics.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/national-glass-centre\/\" alt=\"National Glass Centre Liberty Way Roker Sunderland SR6 0GL\" title=\"National Glass Centre Liberty Way Roker Sunderland SR6 0GL\"><u>National Glass Centre<\/u><\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/sunderland-tyne-and-wear\/\" title=\"Sunderland\" alt=\"Sunderland\"><u>Sunderland<\/u><\/a>\u2019s re-launch on Saturday 29th June is part of the Festival of the North East and the film below courtesy of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northeastfilmarchive.com\/\" title=\"The North East Film Archive\" alt=\"The North East Film Archive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><u>North East Film Archive (NEFA)<\/u><\/a> (opens in a new window) features craftsman glass blowers at the Wear Flint Glass Works in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/sunderland-tyne-and-wear\/\" title=\"Sunderland\" alt=\"Sunderland\"><u>Sunderland<\/u><\/a> in the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SgAQf5I32cA\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" alt=\"Glass Blowing In Sunderland\" title=\"Glass Blowing In Sunderland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/sunderland-tyne-and-wear\/\" title=\"Sunderland\" alt=\"Sunderland\"><u>Sunderland<\/u><\/a>\u2019s glass making tradition dates back to 674 when French and Italian glaziers were invited over by the Anglo-Saxon abbot Benedict Biscop and made the windows for the Monkwearmouth-Jarrow Priory.<\/p>\n<p>The Wear Flint Glass Works shown in the video above was launched in 1858 by Angus and Greener, with ownership passing to James Augustus Jobling in 1885.<\/p>\n<p>Jobling and Co. enjoyed great success from 1921 when Jobling Purser purchased the right to manufacture and market the PYREX brand heat resistant glassware from the American firm Corning Inc.<\/p>\n<p>Few people outside the North East realise that each item of desirable and durable PYREX domestic glass ware, with designs such as Gaeity, Snowflake, Matchmaker, Fiesta and Tally-Ho Hunting for Ringtons, found in every British kitchen after World War II, originated in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/sunderland-tyne-and-wear\/\" title=\"Sunderland\" alt=\"Sunderland\"><u>Sunderland<\/u><\/a> with Jobling&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Corning Glass took control of the Pyrex factory in 1973.<\/p>\n<p>The business was again sold to Newell Ltd in 1994 and then to Arc International.<\/p>\n<p>But in 2007 production moved to France, and commercial glass manufacture ended in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/sunderland-tyne-and-wear\/\" title=\"Sunderland\" alt=\"Sunderland\"><u>Sunderland<\/u><\/a> after hundreds of years.<\/p>\n<p>The region&#8217;s few remaining glass craftsmen now practice their art in the workshops of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/national-glass-centre\/\" alt=\"National Glass Centre Liberty Way Roker Sunderland SR6 0GL\" title=\"National Glass Centre Liberty Way Roker Sunderland SR6 0GL\"><u>National Glass Centre<\/u><\/a>, close to the site of the original <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniesguesthouse.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/monkwearmouth-sunderland\/\" title=\"Monkwearmouth Sunderland\" alt=\"Monkwearmouth Sunderland\"><u>Monkwearmouth<\/u><\/a>
