November 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.<\/p>\n

Organisations and communities the length and breadth of the UK, as well as in countries abroad, will come together on the day to remember the sacrifice of the millions of men and women who died, or returned home wounded, during the harrowing four year conflict.<\/p>\n

If you are staying with us on 11th November 2018 the following events are taking place to commemorate the end of World War One…<\/p>\n

Armistice Services
\nOn Sunday 11 November the annual Armistice Day services and wreath-laying will be taking place across South Tyneside<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n

5pm – Beacon of Light
\nBeacons will be lit across the UK to symbolise the ‘light of hope’ that emerged from the darkness of war.<\/p>\n

A beacon and illuminating 6′ Tommy silhouette will be lit at Harbour Drive<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n

5pm – 5:45pm
\nHarbour Drive<\/u><\/a> South car park will host a short programme of commemorative performances as well as hear a moving reading of letters sent from the front line.<\/p>\n

5:45pm Fireworks – to WW1 songs
\nThis large scale display will replace the annual Bonfire night fireworks displays, which are usually held a week earlier.<\/p>\n

6pm End of Fireworks<\/p>\n

6:01pm Gun fires 11 shots then ‘Guns Fall Silent’<\/p>\n

6:03pm Act of remembrance<\/p>\n

6:05pm Buglers play Last Post<\/p>\n

6:06pm Pipers to play ‘Flowers of the Forest’<\/p>\n

6:10pm End of event<\/p>\n

7:05pm Ringing out for peace
\nBells in 1,000 churches and cathedrals across the country will ring out to commemorate the end of the First World War.<\/p>\n

Other commemorative activities<\/b><\/p>\n

The Word<\/u><\/a> is currently hosting a new free exhibition – South Tyneside Remembers WW1, which looks at how the war affected those who worked at South Shields Public Library at the time.<\/p>\n
