Newcastle upon Tyne by MegaBus Coach
National coach service MegaBus offers a low cost coach service to/from several UK cities and even some European cities via London Victoria. The MegaBus service used to pick up and drop off outside Newcastle upon Tyne Central Station, Neville Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 5DH but this has now changed (from April 2013). The MegaBus Newcastle upon Tyne service now picks up and drops off on John Dobson Street in a coach layby outside the Central Library. This stop is a few minutes walk from Monument Metro station in Newcastle upon Tyne city centre. MegaBus timetable information and tickets can be obtained online here: MegaBus (opens in a new window).
The new MegaBus coach stop on John Dobson Street is a few minutes walk to Monument Metro Station. Exit John Dobson Street and turn right onto New Bridge Street West. After approximately 130 metres the road name changes to Blackett Street. Walk a further 80 metres along Blackett Street and you will reach one of the entrances to Monument Metro Station.
Once you have arrived at Monument Metro Station you need to board a yellow line train on platform one to South Shields. You can see a summary of the first, last and frequency of Monument Metro trains here...

Tyne & Wear Metro ticket prices are as follows...
Monument Metro station to South Shields - single (one-way) journey adult ticket costs £3.30. If you will be returning to Newcastle upon Tyne later that day we recommend that you initially buy an adult DaySaver ticket for £4.80 which allows a full day of Tyne & Wear Metro travel.
A child's single fare is 80p and a child's DaySaver ticket (under 15, proof of age required for over 12's) is £1.20.
The above ticket prices are correct January 2016.
For returning visitors to the North East who may be wondering about off-peak/peak time tickets, off-peak/peak daysavers and return tickets - Tyne & Wear Metro revised it's ticket pricing structure in January 2013. Return and peak/off-peak ticket pricing is no more. It's now just a single fare or DaySaver with no peak or off-peak times.
Comprehensive ticket pricing information, a Metro zone map and a video on how to use the Metro ticket machines can be found on this page of our website: Tyne and Wear Metro.

The recommended walking route from South Shields Metro station to our guest house accommodation in South Shields is as follows... exit the Metro station via the Kepple Street exit and turn left. Now walk towards HSBC bank at the bottom of Fowler Street. With HSBC bank on your left walk along Fowler Street until you reach the traffic lights at the top of the street. South Shields town hall will be in front of you with it's tall clock and bell tower prominently visible. This is the bottom of Beach Road. Turn left and walk along Beach Road, crossing straight over the small roundabout. We are door number 106 on the right hand side of the street, half way along Beach Road.
Alternatively, if your bags are too numerous and/or heavy you can easily take a taxi from the rank along side the Kepple Street exit of South Shields Metro station. Because it's such a short journey this will only cost you a few pounds.
