Sunderland 10K and Half Marathon

Home > Tyne & Wear > Sunderland > Keel Square

Sunderland’s 10K and half marathon take place this Sunday.

If you are staying at our bed and breakfast accommodation and taking part or plan on visiting Sunderland on Sunday we have the race route and information here to help plan your day.

The start and finish of the 10K is at Keel Square opposite the old Vaux Brewery site.

The first part of the race is a 2K loop around Sunderland city centre before reaching Wearmouth Bridge.

Next runners pass the University of Sunderland’s Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s and run alongside the River Wear, passing the National Glass Centre before gently rising up the path to then drop down again toward Sunderland Marina in Roker.

Sunderland Marina is the location of the half way point of the 10K route.

Runners then follow a path along Marine Walk.

A left turn leads into Roker Park.

Roker Park’s bandstand is the 6K mark.

The race route then loops back onto Roker Terrace before a flat 2K run back to Wearmouth Bridge.

Finally, a right turn onto St Mary’s Way leads to the finish line at Keel Square.

You can see a map of the 10K route below.

The Sunderland City Half Marathon and start and finish is also at Keel Square opposite the old Vaux Brewery site.

The first mile of the half marathon passes through the Sunniside area of Sunderland city centre.

A left turn at approximately 3.5 miles takes the course down Toward Road past Mowbray Park and back to the city centre area before heading back towards Ryhope Road.

The turnaround point is just before The Alexandra pub on Queen Alexandra Road.

The halfway point is on the return stretch of Ryhope Road before it reaches Backhouse Park.

Next, runners travel along Burdon Road back to Wearmouth Bridge.

At Wearmouth Bridge there is approximately 4.5 miles left to the finish.

Runners then travel along Dame Dorothy Street, circumnavigating St Peter’s Church before heading to the coast and following the sea front along Roker Terrace.

Upon entering Roker Park there are only 2.6 miles left to complete and the route returns to cross Wearmouth Bridge via Dame Dorothy Street.

The finish line is at St Mary’s Way.

News, Places to Eat & Drink, Places to Visit

National Glass Centre Brasserie

Home > Tyne & Wear > Sunderland > National Glass Centre

Sunderland Football Club subsidiary 1879 Events Management have today announced that they have won the contract to run the restaurant at the National Glass Centre on Liberty Way, Sunderland, SR6 0GL when it reopens this summer.

National Glass Centre Sunderland

Formerly the Throwing Stones restaurant, the new eatery will be part of a £2.25million investment programme in the National Glass Centre which includes remodelled galleries and improved educational facilities at the centre.

The National Glass Centre was taken over by the University of Sunderland in 2010 with it’s redevelopment supported by Arts Council England through it’s award of a £750,000 improvement grant.

The Heritage Lottery Fund also backed the redevelopment of the centre, providing £250,000 towards improvements.

Director of the National Glass Centre James Bustard commented “Everyone involved in the redevelopment of the centre is thoroughly enthused about the reopening in the summer, and about its future success.

We are extremely confident that the new-look centre will further enhance the region’s cultural offer while helping to reinforce ourselves as the leading centre for glass in the UK.”

It is hoped that “a first-class food offering will help strengthen visitor numbers, which can only benefit the city as a whole.” – Gary Hutchinson, commercial director at SAFC.

“1879 Events Management is delighted to be providing such an important service to the National Glass Centre at such an exciting time in its development.

We’re proud to be in partnership with both the National Glass Centre and the University of Sunderland on this venture.”

The opening of the restaurant, to be named National Glass Centre Brasserie, is scheduled for summer 2013.

It hopes to attract lovers of high-quality food and to be added to the list of premium restaurants in the region.

Both daytime and evening menus are to be heavily influenced by local and regional fayre.

A first class food offering is also expected to help strengthen visitor numbers which can only benefit the city of Sunderland as a whole.
