Tyne Tunnel 2

Home > Tyne & Wear > South Tyneside > Jarrow > Tyne Tunnels

The New Tyne Crossing project is a £260M scheme to dual the A19 beneath the River Tyne by building a second road tunnel, and associated highways structures.

Entrance Of Tyne Tunnel Jarrow South Tyneside NE32

The project also involved a major refurbishment of the 1967-built Tyne Tunnel.

With two tunnels up and running, the original, refurbished tunnel provides two lanes of traffic for northbound travel, while the new road tunnel offers two lanes for southbound traffic.

The design capacity of the original tunnel was 24,000 vehicles per day.

The combined capacity of the two road tunnels is now 78,000 vehicles per day.

The new vehicular tunnel is only the third in Britain to be built using immersed tube technology in the river section.

The land tunnels built either side of the River Tyne involved a variety of construction techniques, predominantly cut-and-cover tunnels as well as approximately 70 metres of Sprayed Concrete Lining, which enabled the tunnel to be built beneath major utility connections without disturbing them.

We have uploaded a second video if some news footage of the new Tyne Tunnel 2 aka the New Tyne Crossing opening to our YouTube channel (opens in a new window).

South Shields 365

Home > Tyne & Wear > South Shields

The South Shields 365 master plan is aimed at making South Shields an exciting destination every day of the year.

Among its three to five year objectives are…

The comprehensive redevelopment of Fowler Street West, creating a new retail quarter to the town.

Improvements to the Tyne & Wear Metro, bus station and better traffic management.

A new, quality hotel with conferencing facilities in the town centre.

The creation of opportunities for the development of new national and independent retail and leisure uses.

A new central library and arts centre in the Market Place.

Enhancements to public realm.

The creation of opportunities for new housing.

A remodelled Market Place providing a hub for activities and improving links between the town centre and riverside.

South Shields 365

South Tyneside Council has launched a £100m masterplan to make South Shields an exciting destination every day of the year and already there is progress on the ground.

The ambitious plan – titled South Shields 365 – sets out a bold vision for a radical town centre redevelopment including a new cinema as well as retail and leisure facilities.

Contractors have arrived in South Shields Market Place to prepare the eyesore Wouldhave House, Market Place, NE33 1JF for demolition with the site earmarked for a new central library and arts centre.

The move is a serious signal of intent from South Tyneside Council, which is in discussions with a number of prospective private-sector development partners interested in making the South Shields 365 master plan a reality.

Counsellor Iain Malcolm, leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “By pressing ahead with the demolition of Wouldhave House we are making it absolutely clear that the delivery of South Shields 365 is our number one priority.

As a council, we are taking a strong and decisive lead on site assembly, infrastructure and public realm improvements so that we can create conditions that are ripe for private sector investment.

South Shields has a beautiful coastline, a magnificent riverside and a unique and very welcoming community.

These are powerful assets that we can build on to secure a bright future for our town centre.

The South Shields 365 master plan is about making sure that this tremendous potential is realised.

We are ambitious for South Shields and the key to success is to play to its strengths.”

One of the driving forces behind the development of the masterplan was the shocking discovery that for every £100 of disposable income in their pockets, South Tyneside residents spend only £3.70 in South Shields town centre.

“Like high streets across the country, South Shields town centre is facing major threats and challenges as a result of the rise of online shopping, out-of-town retail parks and the tough economic climate.

Whether we like it or not, the fact is our residents are choosing to spend their money elsewhere.

It has become very clear that the town centre needs to change if it is to prosper.

We cannot turn the clock back.

Our vision for South Shields is to make it a place of year-round cultural, leisure and retail activity for residents, businesses and visitors.

We recognise the need to offer an experience that people cannot get on the internet or at out-of-town retail parks.

A new cinema, for example, would benefit retailers by attracting visitors at all times of day and on every day of the week, playing a key part in growing the South Shields offer and complementing activities on our sea front and riverside.

By expanding our retail and leisure offer, we can not only retain a greater proportion of our residents’ spending power in the borough but also attract more visitors from other parts of the region.”

A powerful theme running throughout the South Shields 365 master plan is the concept of the town centre, riverside and sea front as a peninsula with each offering a gateway to the next.

There is a desire to knit these three distinct areas together in a way that ensures a seamless transition from one to another while still retaining their individual character and function.

The potential for coastal and riverside attractions to boost town centre trade is not lost on a council that is already leading the development of a £2.3m waterfront park on the riverside and a £16m pool and leisure complex on the sea front.

Both projects are set for completion later this year and in keeping with the peninsula theme, supporting schemes to build stronger links with the town centre are under way.

The demolition of Wouldhave House will open up the Market Place to the riverside while a £2.4m scheme to make Ocean Road more pedestrian-friendly will encourage more coastal visitors into the town centre, capitalising on South Shields‘ success as a traditional seaside resort.

Counsellor Malcolm said “When you consider the town centre’s close proximity to the sea front and riverside and each area’s respective strengths, you can see that we are well on the way to developing a truly world-class offer for South Shields.

South Tyneside Council has led an incredible journey of transformation across the borough, from the redevelopment of Boldon Business Park in the 1990’s to the transformation of Jarrow town centre and Cleadon Park .

In many respects South Shields town centre is the final piece of the jigsaw.

We already have a great deal to be proud of but we must move forward with the creation of new opportunities for residents, businesses and visitors.

Modern town centres with attractive retail and leisure facilities have a major bearing on quality of life and by providing them we can make South Tyneside an outstanding place to live, invest and bring up families.”

Gateshead International Jazz Festival 2013

Home > Tyne & Wear > Gateshead > Sage Gateshead

Gateshead International Jazz Festival is the largest UK festival held under one roof and it’s headline acts and themes for 2013’s event have been confirmed to include the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO), Lighthouse, Phronesis, Christine Tobin, Ruby Turner and The Brand New Heavies.

Gateshead International Jazz Festival will take place Friday 5th – Sunday 7th April 2013 at Sage Gateshead, St Mary’s Square, Gateshead Quays, Gateshead, NE8 2JR.

Tickets are on sale from today.

The Sage Gateshead 2013 International Jazz Festival Flyer

The National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) – now enjoying a new and higher profile – will open the festival in Hall One in their first ever visit with special jazz guests.

There is also an opening set from the Sage Gateshead’s own youth jazz ensemble, Jambone.

Hall Two will be welcoming the Soweto Kinch playing material from his new double album ‘The Legend of Mike Smith’ with his new trio.

Saturday night’s Hall One concert presents two jazz suites inspired by the North East of England – ‘Northumbrian Sketches’, written in the 1980’s by Newcastle jazz musician/composer Ian Carr in its first ever North East performance, and ‘Songs to the North Sky’, written in 2012 by Tim Garland, resident in the region.

Both will be performed by Northern Sinfonia orchestra of Sage Gateshead, with jazz soloists Tim Whitehead and Henry Lowther plus award winning trio Lighthouse, featuring the award-winning pianist Gwilym Simcock.

The venue’s intimate Jazz Lounge, created for the festival, will host two afternoons of ‘*Jazz from the North*’ on the Saturday and the Sunday, with bands from the North of England, Scotland and also from the far North with the Verneri Pohjola Trio and Oddarrang, both from Finland and who have recently received a warm reception at the London Jazz Festival.

The connection with Nordic jazz goes further welcoming back Danish bass player Jasper Høiby and his band Phronesis on the Sunday who, since their 2010 appearance at the festival as part of a Loop Collective showcase, have taken Europe by storm.

They are supported by the unique duo Little Radio (Iain Ballamy and Norwegian Stian Carstensen).

A sideways North East connection comes with the unique concert ‘Speed of Grace – a tribute to AC/DC’ by German jazz singer Jens Thomas with Verneri Pohjola whereby the music of AC/DC becomes late night chamber jazz.

Gateshead International Jazz Festival is always delighted to work with broadcaster/musician Alyn Shipton and this year he will work with Sage Gateshead to develop Jazz Words – an exploration of the relationship between jazz and poetry, notably the work of Philip Larkin and W.B.Yeats; ‘Larkin’s Jazz’ involves both jazz settings of his poems but also readings of Larkin’s writing about jazz and the playing of the works he describes.

The event also includes Irish singer Christine Tobin’s highly regarded ‘Sailing to Byzantium’.

Alyn Shipton will also present a live edition of Radio 3’s Jazz Record Requests from the festival.

Seminal French guitarist Bireli Lagrene will also be making a rare appearance outside London; whilst still a master of the Reinhardt legacy, his current band is a free-wheeling quartet reminiscent of 1960’s Blue Note, with saxophonist Franck Wolf, drummer Jean Marc Robin and Hammond organist Jean-Yves Jung providing the texture and groove.

A sensational double bill in Hall One is planned for the last night of the festival with Jools Holland regular Ruby Turner and 90’s superstars The Brand New Heavies, who are now celebrating a new album release.

The Sunday afternoon will also see and hear the Concourse of Sage Gateshead filled to its iconic roof with the sounds of over 100 saxophone players in the culmination of the North East’s own version of Saxophone Massive, the now well established mass participation project for sax players of all ages and abilities playing under the guidance of the project’s originator and Gateshead International Jazz Festival’s regular Andy Sheppard and guitarist Chris Sharkey.

Big Jazz Family Bash will also be back on the Saturday for fun for all the family.

Ros Rigby, Performance Programme Director at Sage Gateshead said: “I am really looking forward to welcoming some new artists to our festival such as the Finnish artists as well as some of the quirkier events like the AC/DC tribute which I’m sure Gateshead’s own Brian Johnson would enjoy!”

Gateshead International Jazz Festival is produced by Sage Gateshead in collaboration with SERIOUS.
