Sandhaven Beach is one of only four North East beaches to receive the award this year.

The other North East beaches to receive the Blue Flag award were Tynemouth Longsands Beach, King Edwards Bay and Whitley Bay.

Additionally Sandhaven Beach received a Seaside Award in acknowledgement of its facilities and litter-free and safe environment.

Across the country, 55 beaches were awarded a Blue Flag, while 113 picked up the new Seaside Award.

This year, the Blue Flag entrants had to meet an even stricter water quality standard to qualify for the coveted, globally recognised award.

Three years after his last show at Tynemouth Priory & Castle sold out in record time, the popular solo artist is set to return this summer.

Chart-topping James is playing only a handful of dates this year and has chosen the Tynemouth setting to perform hits from his three platinum albums on Saturday 13th July 2013.

Tickets for Mouth of the Tyne Festival cost £25 each plus booking fee go on sale from 9am on Thursday 7th March on the TicketMaster website.

North Tyneside Elected Mayor, Linda Arkley said “I am delighted to welcome James Morrison back to North Tyneside.

Securing another high calibre music act for a sixth consecutive year is testament to the event being established as one of the North’s favourite summer festivals.

Tourism is worth £243million to the borough’s economy and this festival is a key event in our calendar.”

Best known for the hits ‘You Give Me Something’, ‘Wonderful World’, ‘You Make It Real’ and ‘I Won’t Let You Go’, Warwickshire-born James Morrison is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist who has enjoyed chart-topping success since his rise to fame in 2006.

As well as James Morrison, Tynemouth Priory & Castle has played host to a number of big name artists over the past few years including The Wanted, McFly, The Script, Scouting for Girls and Beverley Knight.

Supported this year by Kier North Tyneside, the four-day festival features live music, theatrical entertainment and special one-off performances.

Further details of the weekend’s programme of acts will be announced soon.

The purpose-built facility, at Blue Reef Aquarium Tynemouth, will also care for other marine life.

The aquarium, working with the animal charity Pawz for Thought, has cared for more that 200 rescued seals over the past 10 years.

Growing demand has led to the decision to build a permanent unit.

Due to open in time for the Easter holidays, it will be able to accommodate up to six seal pups.

Soundproof windows will enable visitors to view the rescued animals and signs will provide information on a variety of topics, including what to do if a stranded seal is spotted.
