Dogger Bank wind farm’s base of operations and maintenance at Port of Tyne officially opened in South Shields today.

Once complete, Dogger Bank will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm providing renewable wind powered electricity to 6 million UK homes.

One rotation of one of Dogger Bank’s 277 turbines will generate enough electricity to power a UK home for two days.

Dogger Bank’s long term operational home, Dogger Bank Operations & Maintenance Base, is located at Port of Tyne – five minutes drive from our bed and breakfast accommodation.

Dogger Bank itself will be located between 125km and 290km off the Yorkshire coast in the North Sea, with water depths ranging from 18m to 63m.

Dogger Bank is a joint venture between SSE Renewables (40%), Equinor (40%) and Eni Plenitude (20%).

SSE Renewables is leading on development and construction and Equinor will lead on the operational phase.

Dogger Bank wind farm is being built in three phases – Dogger Bank A, B & C.

The Dogger Bank Operations & Maintenance Base at Port of Tyne will host an estimated 400 jobs and a central operations control room for the wind farm.

The Dogger Bank wind farm is under construction is due to produce its first power this summer.

It will take approximately three years for the project to fully ramp up and all of the operations will be managed from the new Port of Tyne Dogger Bank Operations & Maintenance Base facility for the wind farm’s 35-40 year lifespan.

Once fully operational Dogger Bank wind farm – made up of three phases with potential for a fourth – is expected to generate 3.6GW of energy, about 5% of the UK’s entire requirement.
