HMS Northumberland at Port of Tyne

Northumberland’s affiliated warship HMS Northumberland will be at Port of Tyne’s Northumbrian Quay on Saturday 27th January 2024.

HMS Northumberland is a powerful and versatile Type 23 frigate of the Royal Navy.

Christened in 1994, she is the eighth ship to bear this proud name, carrying a legacy of over 300 years of maritime service.

Clad in a sleek grey hull, the 143-meter-long Northumberland displaces 4,200 tons.

Her stealthy design minimizes her radar signature, making her a formidable opponent in modern warfare.

Beneath the waves, her powerful Rolls-Royce Tyne gas turbines propel her at speeds exceeding 28 knots, ensuring swift response to any threat.

HMS Northumberland’s arsenal is as diverse as the missions she undertakes.

From the Sea Ceptor air defence missiles that paint the sky with streaks of fire to the Harpoon anti-ship missiles that pierce enemy vessels, she is equipped to dominate both air and sea.

Her sonar and torpedoes keep her vigilant against lurking submarines, while her Oerlikon cannon ensures precision strikes against smaller targets.

HMS Northumberland is also a vital player in humanitarian missions, delivering aid to disaster-stricken regions and supporting international peacekeeping efforts.

Her Merlin helicopters provide invaluable aerial reconnaissance and transportation, while her onboard medical facilities offer crucial assistance in times of crisis.

HMS Northumberland is affiliated with the county of Northumberland in northeast England, where she was built.

She has participated in numerous operations around the globe, from counter-piracy missions in the Indian Ocean to NATO exercises in the Arctic.

In 2023, she was awarded the Surface Flotilla’s Underwater Warfare Trophy for her exceptional skills in hunting and monitoring submarines.

Dogger Bank Operations & Maintenance Base

Dogger Bank wind farm’s base of operations and maintenance at Port of Tyne officially opened in South Shields today.

Once complete, Dogger Bank will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm providing renewable wind powered electricity to 6 million UK homes.

One rotation of one of Dogger Bank’s 277 turbines will generate enough electricity to power a UK home for two days.

Dogger Bank’s long term operational home, Dogger Bank Operations & Maintenance Base, is located at Port of Tyne – five minutes drive from our bed and breakfast accommodation.

Dogger Bank itself will be located between 125km and 290km off the Yorkshire coast in the North Sea, with water depths ranging from 18m to 63m.

Dogger Bank is a joint venture between SSE Renewables (40%), Equinor (40%) and Eni Plenitude (20%).

SSE Renewables is leading on development and construction and Equinor will lead on the operational phase.

Dogger Bank wind farm is being built in three phases – Dogger Bank A, B & C.

The Dogger Bank Operations & Maintenance Base at Port of Tyne will host an estimated 400 jobs and a central operations control room for the wind farm.

The Dogger Bank wind farm is under construction is due to produce its first power this summer.

It will take approximately three years for the project to fully ramp up and all of the operations will be managed from the new Port of Tyne Dogger Bank Operations & Maintenance Base facility for the wind farm’s 35-40 year lifespan.

Once fully operational Dogger Bank wind farm – made up of three phases with potential for a fourth – is expected to generate 3.6GW of energy, about 5% of the UK’s entire requirement.
