College’s Multi £Million Upgrade Complete

Home > Tyne & Wear > South Shields > South Tyneside College > South Shields Marine School

South Tyneside College’s reputation as a world-leading marine training centre is set to be further enhanced after the completion of a major £1.5million upgrade to its state-of-the-art simulation facilities.

At its core is a full-mission bridge projection system which includes Kongsberg K-Line type consoles, complemented by new full-mission engine room consoles, which include touch screen control and Kongsberg Big-View software.

There is also a new 8-bridge Kongsberg desktop bridge simulation suite, integrated to VTS, and a digital CCTV recording and playback system operating throughout which will allow staff to monitor the non-technical skills of students.

The development has been welcomed by Gary Hindmarch, deputy principal – maritime & higher education, who said “Demand for marine simulation training has continued apace and it is vital our facilities are the best anywhere in the world, they are class-leading.

All ranks of maritime personnel train at the college, from cadets to officers, masters and pilots.

In the safety of a simulated environment, they experience emergencies and develop the skills they need to build a broad range of knowledge.

For many years the college has played a very significant role in simulation training and is renowned as a market leader, delivering specialist training to organisations in the UK and around the world.

We have overhauled every aspect of our simulation system’s performance and capabilities to enable us to continue to meet all future training needs and demands in a highly specialist, global marketplace.”

College’s Multi £million Upgrade Complete Picture 2

A key part of the overhaul is the installation of multiple cameras and microphones on to bridges as part of the marine school’s response to growing demands for training which addresses human actions and behaviours through Human Element Leadership and Management (HELM).

It is designed to reduce accidents and improve crew performance by studying skills such as team working, leadership, situational awareness, decision making and communication i.e. what is said and implied through body language and gestures.

South Tyneside College has installed 30 cameras and eight microphones in bridges and engine spaces to record what is said and by whom throughout each exercise, with results utilised by an instructor on advanced recording and playback software.

Further investment, with partner Safety Technology, will see the opening of a climbing tower at its Marine and Offshore Safety Training Centre (MOST) based by the River Tyne in South Shields – which will allow working at height to those aiming to work in the offshore wind market.

It will be a tremendous addition to the centre’s existing facilities which include an environmental pool used for survival training, an eight-seat helicopter escape module, and offshore platform boat transfer simulator.

The centre, one of the foremost safety training facilities in the UK, is used by hundreds of organisations around the world.

Courses utilise extensive and unique facilities in offshore safety training and include Europe’s first offshore platform boat transfer simulator.

South Shields Marine School has also launched courses in ice navigation, designed to prepare maritime personnel for the introduction of the Polar Code in 2014 when there will be requirements for an Ice Navigator to navigate in ice conditions.

Overall, South Tyneside College has spent £3.2million upgrading its maritime facilities in South Shields.

Port of Tyne £180million Expansion Plan

Home > Tyne & Wear > South Shields > Port of Tyne

Port of Tyne plan could bring 1,200 jobs

Tyne Dock Port of Tyne Aerial Photograph

Up to 1,200 jobs are being promised with a £180m expansion plan for the Port of Tyne.

The proposals, for the south bank of the river, include storage facilities for imported wood pellet bio fuel.

But the plan is dependent on the port, which is already the largest handler of wood pellets in Europe, finding an energy firm to partner the project.

The port estimates the proposals could create 900 jobs in construction and 300 more permanent posts.

The Port of Tyne, once famous for coal exports, is now the UK’s largest car exporter, the fourth largest coal importer and one of the largest handlers of wood pellet in the world.

Future sustainability

Chief executive officer Andrew Moffat said “It is in renewable energy where we see the next major area of growth for us.

“That is why we are working with major companies in the power generation industry to identify their future requirements and making sure we will be ready to meet their needs.

“These are very significant plans for the Port of Tyne, which are imperative for both the sustainability of the port and the future delivery of the government’s carbon reduction targets.”

South Shields MP David Miliband, said “This is very good news for South Shields and the surrounding communities.

“This will provide the jobs we very much need in this area now and for the future, and, importantly, is supporting the growth of renewable fuels to provide the clean, green energy we need for the future.”

Planning applications are due to submitted later this year.

South Shields 365

Home > Tyne & Wear > South Shields

The South Shields 365 master plan is aimed at making South Shields an exciting destination every day of the year.

Among its three to five year objectives are…

The comprehensive redevelopment of Fowler Street West, creating a new retail quarter to the town.

Improvements to the Tyne & Wear Metro, bus station and better traffic management.

A new, quality hotel with conferencing facilities in the town centre.

The creation of opportunities for the development of new national and independent retail and leisure uses.

A new central library and arts centre in the Market Place.

Enhancements to public realm.

The creation of opportunities for new housing.

A remodelled Market Place providing a hub for activities and improving links between the town centre and riverside.

South Shields 365

South Tyneside Council has launched a £100m masterplan to make South Shields an exciting destination every day of the year and already there is progress on the ground.

The ambitious plan – titled South Shields 365 – sets out a bold vision for a radical town centre redevelopment including a new cinema as well as retail and leisure facilities.

Contractors have arrived in South Shields Market Place to prepare the eyesore Wouldhave House, Market Place, NE33 1JF for demolition with the site earmarked for a new central library and arts centre.

The move is a serious signal of intent from South Tyneside Council, which is in discussions with a number of prospective private-sector development partners interested in making the South Shields 365 master plan a reality.

Counsellor Iain Malcolm, leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “By pressing ahead with the demolition of Wouldhave House we are making it absolutely clear that the delivery of South Shields 365 is our number one priority.

As a council, we are taking a strong and decisive lead on site assembly, infrastructure and public realm improvements so that we can create conditions that are ripe for private sector investment.

South Shields has a beautiful coastline, a magnificent riverside and a unique and very welcoming community.

These are powerful assets that we can build on to secure a bright future for our town centre.

The South Shields 365 master plan is about making sure that this tremendous potential is realised.

We are ambitious for South Shields and the key to success is to play to its strengths.”

One of the driving forces behind the development of the masterplan was the shocking discovery that for every £100 of disposable income in their pockets, South Tyneside residents spend only £3.70 in South Shields town centre.

“Like high streets across the country, South Shields town centre is facing major threats and challenges as a result of the rise of online shopping, out-of-town retail parks and the tough economic climate.

Whether we like it or not, the fact is our residents are choosing to spend their money elsewhere.

It has become very clear that the town centre needs to change if it is to prosper.

We cannot turn the clock back.

Our vision for South Shields is to make it a place of year-round cultural, leisure and retail activity for residents, businesses and visitors.

We recognise the need to offer an experience that people cannot get on the internet or at out-of-town retail parks.

A new cinema, for example, would benefit retailers by attracting visitors at all times of day and on every day of the week, playing a key part in growing the South Shields offer and complementing activities on our sea front and riverside.

By expanding our retail and leisure offer, we can not only retain a greater proportion of our residents’ spending power in the borough but also attract more visitors from other parts of the region.”

A powerful theme running throughout the South Shields 365 master plan is the concept of the town centre, riverside and sea front as a peninsula with each offering a gateway to the next.

There is a desire to knit these three distinct areas together in a way that ensures a seamless transition from one to another while still retaining their individual character and function.

The potential for coastal and riverside attractions to boost town centre trade is not lost on a council that is already leading the development of a £2.3m waterfront park on the riverside and a £16m pool and leisure complex on the sea front.

Both projects are set for completion later this year and in keeping with the peninsula theme, supporting schemes to build stronger links with the town centre are under way.

The demolition of Wouldhave House will open up the Market Place to the riverside while a £2.4m scheme to make Ocean Road more pedestrian-friendly will encourage more coastal visitors into the town centre, capitalising on South Shields‘ success as a traditional seaside resort.

Counsellor Malcolm said “When you consider the town centre’s close proximity to the sea front and riverside and each area’s respective strengths, you can see that we are well on the way to developing a truly world-class offer for South Shields.

South Tyneside Council has led an incredible journey of transformation across the borough, from the redevelopment of Boldon Business Park in the 1990’s to the transformation of Jarrow town centre and Cleadon Park .

In many respects South Shields town centre is the final piece of the jigsaw.

We already have a great deal to be proud of but we must move forward with the creation of new opportunities for residents, businesses and visitors.

Modern town centres with attractive retail and leisure facilities have a major bearing on quality of life and by providing them we can make South Tyneside an outstanding place to live, invest and bring up families.”
